Decommodification

Principle 3: Decommodification

In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, "our community" seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Note: From August 22 - Sept 2 2025, The Rusty Iris crew will be out of communication while we participate in an event in Black Rock City, Nevada. The event annual event attracts 80,000 people who build a temporary city based on a series of ten principles. The purpose of the event is to re-think how we live and to take what we learn back to our everyday lives and communities. We will not mention the name of the event here, out of respect for the event's intellectual property.

We have scheduled a series of posts to be published during our absence. Each post will feature one of the ten principles, in which we have substituted the words "our community" for the name of the event - which we think is in spirit of what the event tries to accomplish. We hope you will participate by contemplating that principle and seeing whether applying it to your everyday life would enrich your world and the world we share.
